Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her long-standing fight against authoritarianism, her unwavering defense of democracy, and her courageous moral leadership in a country facing deep crisis.
Known as Venezuela ’s “Iron Lady,” Machado has been in hiding for more than 14 months after refusing to step down following Nicolás Maduro’s victory in elections criticized by the US and the EU.
According to recent surveys, both the US and most Venezuelans do not recognize Maduro’s leadership as legitimate, citing irregularities in the past two elections.
Despite disqualifications, threats, and enforced silence, Machado has continued her efforts advocating for free elections, mobilizing citizens, exposing human rights abuses, and acting as the moral conscience of Venezuela.
Nobel Prizes in chemistry, physics, medicine, and literature were also awarded this week, while the economics prize is set to be announced on Monday.

According to Al Jazeera, each laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a cash prize funded by the Nobel Foundation, which manages Nobel’s endowment. This year, each prize is worth 11 million Swedish kronor (around $1.2 million).
The awards are formally presented on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s death in 1896.
