Imphal: In a crucial step towards peace restoration in Manipur, Kuki MLAs are preparing to engage in discussions with their Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) regarding the formation of a new govt.

According to a credible source, preparations are complete for a meeting scheduled at Kangpokpi district headquarters on May 19, which will include nine out of 10 Kuki MLAs and various Kuki CSOs. The source said BJP MLA and former minister Vungzagin Valte, who suffered serious injuries during a mob attack on May 4, 2023, will be absent from the meeting, though a representative may attend on his behalf.

The meeting holds particular importance for Kuki legislators, as the assembly remains in suspended animation. These elected representatives are considering the establishment of a new govt, following the implementation of President's rule since Feb 13.

This initiative follows recent meetings between BJP northeast coordinator, Sambit Patra, and Kuki MLAs in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi district headquarters on May 5 and 6. It is worth noting that the 60-member Manipur legislative assembly includes 10 Kuki MLAs. The MLAs have abstained from participating in three assembly sessions over the past two years due to various unresolved demands.
