The drama surrounding Max Verstappen's future continues to rumble on, but with so many reports piling in and speculation whirling, it can be hard to understand where the reigning world champion truly stands as he weighs up Red Bull and Mercedes. Express Sport has you covered. Here is the current state of play as Verstappen, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli work out their place in the 2025 driver market.
What we know is trueFirstly, let's get the big one out of the way. Mercedes' interest in Verstappen is real, and the Dutchman is at least curious about a move to Brackley. What is not known is how advanced talks are between the two parties, but Russell let on in Austria that they are "ongoing".
We also know that Russell is committed to Mercedes long-term. The 27-year-old, despite tenuous links with Red Bull and Aston Martin, wants to stay with Toto Wolff's organisation. His performances in 2025 have warranted a renewal, but ultimately, if Verstappen becomes available, his boss is unlikely to sacrifice rookie Kimi Antonelli to make room.
Unfortunately for fans, a resolution to the saga is not expected before the summer break. Red Bull are bringing upgrades to Belgium, and Verstappen will hope that they can make the RB21 easier to drive and quicker relative to McLaren.
It's also clear that Red Bull are fearful that Verstappen will leave. This was hinted at with the decision to sack team principal Christian Horner, who departed last week following 20 years as CEO and team principal. However, their saving grace could be that the reigning champion does not need to rush into a decision.

Indeed, given how enticing a proposition Verstappen is, just about any team would break contracts to sign him for 2027, too. The four-time champion can afford to stay put for another year and survey the pecking order after the new technical regulations come into effect.
What we know is fictionIt is important to make this clear: Verstappen has not made his decision, and contrary to some speculation, he has not signed a contract with Mercedes. It has been reported that his desire is, if possible, to stay with Red Bull, and the Dutchman has previously explained the important role loyalty plays in his decision-making.
That said, there is no guarantee that Verstappen will stay, even after Horner, who was a thorn in the side of his entourage, was dismissed. According to De Telegraaf, the 51-year-old's exit has not boosted Red Bull's chances of retaining their star driver.
