Making a lasagne is quite a commitment. Before you've even put the dish in the oven, you've probably spent an hour chopping, frying, making the ragu, and preparing the bechamel sauce.
So there's nothing more disappointing than when it comes out tasting less than perfect. However, one food writer has revealed the secret ingredient from their Italian grandma. She said the unexpected spice adds an unmatched depth of flavour and creates the best lasagna ever, even though it may seem peculiar at first.
She encourages cooks to add cinnamon to the cheese sauce, a spice usually reserved for desserts or breakfast. She revealed: "It might sound odd to have the warm spice mixed into ricotta, but it's a total game-changer."
Writing on Delish, the foodie said her grandmother's recipe makes the "best lasagna I've ever tried, hands down."
Her recipe calls for a ricotta sauce, which this recipe uses. Instead of making a bechamel sauce, you combine ricotta cheese with egg, parsley, and salt. Then, you assemble the lasagne, layering the meat sauce, pasta and cheese.
She added: "It creates a depth of flavour that nothing else can match. My grandma didn't keep track of how much she used to add, but we go heavy, with about 1 1/2 teaspoons, which we'll never skimp on again."
Other recipes suggest adding nutmeg to the cheese sauce instead, which also adds a warmth to the recipe, and some say is the traditional Italian way to cook lasagne.
Mary Berry's recipe helps speed up the process of making lasagne, and promises a "super quick but perfect" weeknight meal.
