Indian cricket fans are eagerly awaiting the 5-match Test series between India and England starting June 20, 2025. Meanwhile, the India A team is currently playing an unofficial Test series against England Lions in Canterbury, with the first match from May 30 and the second scheduled for June 6-9. Amidst this, there’s buzz about whether India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill and senior batsman KL Rahul will feature in these unofficial matches before the main series.
What’s the Update on Gill and Rahul’s Participation?Originally, Shubman Gill was expected to play in the second unofficial Test against England Lions. KL Rahul was slated to travel with the main Indian team. However, Gill has reportedly requested rest from the BCCI after his IPL team, Gujarat Titans, was knocked out on May 30 following their defeat by Mumbai Indians in the eliminator. Given the tight schedule, it may be tough for Gill to immediately join and participate in the unofficial Test.
On the other hand, KL Rahul’s Delhi Capitals exited the IPL earlier, playing their last match on May 24. This has given Rahul some rest, and reports suggest he wants to leave for England early to prepare for the upcoming Test series. If Gill skips the unofficial Test, Rahul might get the opportunity to play in his place. Rahul had previously gone ahead of schedule to Australia and played an India A unofficial Test ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
What Did the Team Manager Say?To clarify the situation, Yudhveer Singh, appointed as the team manager for the England tour and a UPCA board member, spoke to the media. According to a Sportstar report, Yudhveer Singh said, “I have not received any information yet. Only after the IPL concludes will it be clear if there are any changes in the India A squad.”
With the IPL just ending, fans will have to wait a bit longer to know for sure if Shubman Gill and KL Rahul will feature in the unofficial Tests before the big series against England.
