The Indian cricket team for the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to begin on September 9, is set to be announced in the third week of August. One of the biggest questions surrounding the squad is the status of captain Suryakumar Yadav, who has recently withdrawn from the Duleep Trophy due to fitness concerns. Although he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the NCA and has resumed batting practice, his fitness clearance remains uncertain.
If Suryakumar is unable to recover in time for the Asia Cup, the team management will have to consider alternative captaincy choices. Shubman Gill emerges as the frontrunner to lead the side in the event Suryakumar’s fitness does not improve. Gill has been the white-ball vice-captain and brings leadership experience as the current Test captain. His inclusion in the T20 squad would make him a natural candidate to assume captaincy duties.
Another strong contender for captaincy is Shreyas Iyer, who might be included in the team. Iyer offers the dual advantage of being a capable leader and filling the crucial No. 4 batting slot, which Suryakumar usually occupies. His experience and recent performances have made him a valuable option.
Axar Patel is also being considered as a key player to replace Suryakumar, especially given his important role as a left-arm all-rounder in the T20 setup. Patel has prior captaincy experience in the shortest format and could be entrusted with leadership responsibilities if required.
In summary, should Suryakumar Yadav be ruled out, the captaincy and key roles in the Asia Cup squad could be taken up by Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, or Axar Patel, each bringing different strengths to the team.
