Tesla has officially heightened excitement for its entry into the Indian market, releasing its first "coming soon" teaser across social media channels. The simple yet impactful visual features the iconic Tesla logo alongside the word "India," confirming the electric vehicle giant's imminent arrival. This strategic move comes just days before the scheduled opening of Tesla's inaugural "experience center" in India, set for July 15 at the Jio World Drive in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).
Despite a growing electric vehicle market in India, the anticipation for Tesla's presence remains distinctively high among consumers. Following the Mumbai launch, a second experience center is planned to open in New Delhi by the end of July. Tesla has already established an office in Bengaluru and is actively exploring warehouse spaces in Karnataka and Gurugram, indicating a broader operational setup in the country.
Model Y Testing Underway, Deliveries ImminentThe automaker has been rigorously testing its Model Y and Model 3 vehicles on Indian roads. It has been confirmed that Tesla vehicles in India will utilize the CCS2 charging port, a standard prevalent in Europe and India, rather than the NCAS port used in the US market. Recent reports indicate that at least five Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) units, imported from Tesla's Shanghai plant, have arrived at Mumbai port and are undergoing accelerated testing on local roads.
The Mumbai experience center will initially be open to VIPs and commercial partners for the first week, with public access expected to begin the following week. Deliveries of the vehicles are anticipated to commence by the end of August.
Model Y Specifications and FeaturesThe Tesla Model Y, which holds the title of the world's best-selling electric car, will lead Tesla's product offering in India. While global variants often include all-wheel-drive and long-range battery options, offering an EPA-estimated range of 526 km and a top speed of 200 km/h, specific configurations for India will be confirmed upon launch. The Model Y can accelerate from 0 to 96 km/h (0 to 60 mph) in as little as 4.6 seconds.
Key features expected in the Model Y include a 15-speaker audio system, a hands-free tailgate, and eight exterior cameras. Safety and driver-assistance features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist are also anticipated. Globally, the Model Y is priced around $44,990 in the US, but the Indian pricing will be significantly higher due to prevailing import duties, which can be as much as 70% for fully built imported vehicles below $40,000.
