Trump and Putin peace talks end in NO DEAL as Vlad floats Moscow meetup

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have walked away from their crunch talks without having made a deal this evening, with "ceasefire" having not featured once in their public address.

The two presidents were locked in negotiations for nearly three hours this evening after touching down in Anchorage, Alaska, in a bid to hammer out a peace deal for Ukraine. It had been suggested that they could spend up to eight hours locked in bilateral negotiations while hoping to end the now three-year-long conflict.

Mr Trump admitted after an initial address by Putin - who discussed the two nations' "neighbourly" links - that the two had failed to hash out an official deal despite speaking for nearly three hours.

The President thanked his Russian counterpart for the "profound" statement and described their meeting as "very productive".

He said: "There were many, many points that we agreed on. I would say a couple of big ones, but we haven't quite got there, we've made some headway. There's no deal until there's a deal."

Mr Trump, who is typically upbeat on stage and usually takes questions from the press following major public apperances like this, appeared "downbeat", analysts have said, debuting with a "subdued" demeanour.

Matt Dimmick, the former Russia director for the US office for the secretary of defence, said his demenour likely meant the US had struggled to make any headway with Russian negotiators.

He said: “The fact that both of them went up, gave brief statements, talked in vague terms and had really no concrete deliverables to discuss with the press, I think, says everything about this particular sit-down,” Dimmick said.

“I’m guessing that Trump and his team were not able to convince Putin that it was time for talking about a ceasefire and taking it to the next stage. Otherwise, they would’ve mentioned that in glowing terms.”

Mr Dimmick added: “I don’t think he had anything to crow about up there on the stage.”
