Zack Snyder's 2011 action fantasy film Sucker Punch, featuring Oscar Isaac, John Hamm and Emily Browning, initially slipped under the radar but is now experiencing a resurgence of interest. However, opinions are divided, with some hailing it as a classic while others dismiss it as misogynistic drivel.
Snyder himself has acknowledged his film is "so movie", in response to YouTuber Mike's Mic who described the film, which holds a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as "the most movie ever."
In a post on social media platform X, Snyder agreed with Mike's assessment, saying: "Mike's right."

It's easy to misconstrue the film as a cheap, psycho-sexual horror designed to appeal to the wrong crowd.
One IMDb reviewer gave the film a respectable 7/10, stating: "it's not for everyone.", reports the Express.

They added: "It has been called any number of things in derogative fashion, which since I enjoyed the film a lot means I'm a misogynist fetishist gamer, which to the best of my knowledge is not true. Lest I'm in the closet and now in middle age about to unleash traits and feelings previously untapped."
However, there's also an argument to be made for the film being somewhat of a feminist adventure. The true nature of the film remains hidden until the final moments, keeping you on the edge of your seat.
We follow the aptly named "Babydoll" (Browning) as she is sent away from her abusive stepfather to a sinister asylum where she is ogled by repugnant male stereotypes.
The asylum, it transpires, is not what it appears to be, and the girls (Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish) are being groomed for something far more sinister.
One fan commented on Mike's video, "'Movies that film bros hate because they can't imagine a movie isn't for them or about them' is my favourite genre of movie".

However, we witness the women unite in an action-packed parallel universe, armed with machine guns, amidst burning ruins and slow-motion punches, to obliterate the monstrous men they encounter.
The conclusion is eerie and open to interpretation, with a second "Snyder-cut" ending that may or may not be unveiled, stoking speculation about the true meaning of the film.
Browning's performance is captivating, her wide, tear-filled eyes and pigtails making a stark statement about the observer and the observed.
However, the scanty costumes were a turn-off for some from the get-go, with critic Justin Brown posting on Rotten Tomatoes: "This was god awful. There was a lack of depth in the female characters so it's just eye candy with some dope action scenes. But without any substance, the gimmicks get old very fast."
Brandon Collins remarked: "Despite some incredible visuals and eye candy, this movie executed so poorly and backwards that it's offensive. The actresses were clearly sold a different movie than what was ultimately put on the screen. Emily Browning was greatly miscast."
However, Browning's remarks during the film's press tour in 2011 seem to contradict this. When asked if she believed Sucker Punch was truly about a young girl's fantasy, she told IndieLondon: "I think that idea that girls fantasise about Barbie and having a husband... that's so something that society puts onto us to sell pink toys! When I was three-years-old I told my mum that I wanted to be a truck driver.
"You know, I used to play with guns with my brothers and play catch the flag and go paintballing... so, this is totally a girl fantasy to me. And the fact that we're wearing awesome outfits at the same time just makes it like ideal girl superhero. It's so something I would imagine."
Sucker Punch is currently available for streaming on Amazon and can be rented on Apple TV.
