Shiva Mutthi is mentioned in Shiv Puran. According to this, there is a ritual of offering a handful of grains to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan, which is called Shiva Mutthi. It is believed that if Lord Shiva is offered his favourite grains in Sawan, he becomes happy.

Shiva fist contains 5 types of grains - rice, white sesame seeds, wheat or barley, urad dal, whole moong and satua. Shiva fist should be offered in the evening on Monday of Sawan.

On the first Monday offer a handful of rice grains to the Shivling, on the second Monday offer a handful of white sesame seeds, on the third Monday offer a handful of whole green gram and on the last Monday offer a handful of wheat or barley to the Shivling. If in a year there are five Mondays in Sawan, then a handful of Satua should be offered on the fifth Monday.
