A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Kamvari River in Bhiwandi on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Suraj Tiwari (14), a resident of Kharu Bai Nagar in Shelar village, Bhiwandi.
Police said the boy had left home along with two friends to swim in the river on Saturday. Tiwari reportedly ventured into the water to retrieve one of his lost slippers but failed to gauge the depth and drowned. Upon witnessing the incident, his two friends fled the scene and did not inform his family.
When Tiwari did not return home until late at night, his family launched a search but could not locate him. They then approached the police to lodge a missing person complaint. Meanwhile, local residents circulated his photographs on social media, urging people to contact them if they had any information.
Police said locals later spotted a body floating in the Kamvari River and immediately alerted them. A fire brigade team was called in and recovered the body. It was sent to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Bhiwandi for a post-mortem examination.
During questioning, the two friends admitted they fled out of fear after seeing him drown. Preliminary investigation revealed that Tiwari had entered the water to retrieve his slipper because he feared his mother would scold him.
