According to the Vedic calendar, Hinduism calculates time based on the Samvat. There are a total of 12 full moons in a Samvat, and each has its own religious significance. However, the full moon of the month of Kartik is considered the most special and fruitful. On this day, the moon is full in all its phases, making it considered a day of special fruitfulness.
The scriptures state that performing special religious activities at pilgrimage sites or religious cities like Haridwar on Kartik Purnima frees a person from three types of suffering. Bathing in the waters of the Ganges also brings three benefits. Charity and worship are also considered to be of special significance on this day.
Festival of Kartik Purnima in Haridwar
Haridwar's learned religious leader, Pandit Shridhar Shastri, explains that devotees from across the country flock to Haridwar on the day of Kartik Purnima. Bathing in the Ganges, performing prayers, and performing religious rituals here cleanses one of their sins and brings happiness and prosperity to life. This year, Kartik Purnima will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 5th.
According to Pandit Shridhar Shastri, if devotees chant mantras dedicated to Mother Ganga, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva while bathing in the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri on this day, they are liberated from physical, divine, and material suffering.
Freedom from Three Types of Suffering and Three Benefits
Pandit Shridhar Shastri explains that one receives relief from physical suffering, i.e., bodily pain and incurable diseases, divine suffering, i.e., relief from natural calamities, and material suffering, i.e., relief from worldly troubles.
Bathing in the Ganges on Kartik Purnima also provides three benefits: seeing Mother Ganga, bathing, and drinking Ganga water lead to salvation. These three actions cure all kinds of diseases and bestow the blessings of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Mother Ganga upon the individual.
Special Importance of Bathing in the Ganges in Haridwar
Pandit Shridhar Shastri says that Haridwar holds the greatest significance of Mother Ganga in the entire world. Bathing in the Ganges water here is considered life-purifying and absolves the sins of many lifetimes. Taking a dip at Har Ki Pauri on Kartik Purnima not only gives a person spiritual peace but also brings new energy and positivity in their life.
