In Hinduism, the series of festivals begins with the month of Ashwin. Diwali, which falls in the month of Kartik, is one of the most significant festivals of Hinduism, celebrated on Kartik Amavasya. The beginning of Kartik Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) marks the beginning of a special fast for married women and the subsequent blessing of children, which is eagerly awaited throughout the year in Hinduism. A special fast dedicated to children falls on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Kartik Krishna Paksha, the same day as Diwali. This festival is observed for the birth of a child, their longevity, and their protection. Let's explore the details.

Only the date changes
Haridwar's learned religious leader, Pandit Shridhar Shastri, explains that the Ahoi Mata fast is observed on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Kartik Krishna Paksha. Ahoi Ashtami is observed four days after Karva Chauth and eight days before Diwali. This fast is observed on the same day as Diwali, only the date changes. According to religious texts, women devoted to their children observe this fast for their longevity, protection, and prosperity. In Hinduism, this festival is awaited year-round.
Waterless like Karva Chauth
The Ahoi Ashtami fast is observed for the benefit of their children, and will be observed on October 14th in 2025. According to religious texts, this fast is observed without water, similar to Karva Chauth. On this day, mothers observe this fast for their children, abstaining from food or water, beginning at sunrise and continuing until the stars appear at night. In the evening, after sunset, a picture of Ahoi Mata is drawn and worshipped, followed by offering Arghya (offering of water). At the time of breaking the fast, mothers complete the fast by offering Halwa, Puri, gram, and rice grains to Ahoi Mata.
