After being elected as 2025 New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani called out the US President Donald Trump in his victory speech saying, "Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you - turn the volume up."
"Will put an end to 'the culture of corruption' that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks," the new NYC mayor said.
Speaking to the people of New York after being elected as NYC mayor, Mamdani said, " We will fight for you; because we are you."
He said that his decisive victory shows a way to defeat Trump, who has been a fierce critic of the young Muslim's Democratic socialist policies.
"If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him," Mamdani said in a victory speech to supporters. "In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light."
Referring to his opponent Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani said, "My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," and described his win as one for all New Yorkers -- from taxi drivers to line cooks.
"We will fight for you; because we are you," Mamdani told the people of New York after the historic win, adding that "today we have spoken in a clear voice; hope is alive."
"New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change, a mandate for a new kind of politics, a mandate for a city we can afford and a mandate for a government that delivers exactly that," Mamdani added.
Mamdani celebrated his win in the NYC elections by quoting Jawaharlal Nehru's iconic Tryst with Destiny speech from 1947 when India marked its independence from over 200 years of British rule.

"A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance," quoted Mamdani, adding that tonight New York has stepped from the old into the new.
He addressed the cheering crowd, saying, "The future is in our hands."

Mamdani had been the frontrunner for months and defeated Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. Cuomo had secured Trump’s endorsement only on the eve of the vote. Mamdani, who earlier unseated Cuomo in the Democratic primary, officially clinched victory in June.

Trump attributed the Republican Party’s latest electoral setbacks to two factors — his name not being on the ballot and the ongoing government shutdown.
In a recent post on the social media platform, Truth Social, Trump wrote, “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,” referencing pollster analysis to support his claim.
