There's good news for senior citizens traveling by train. If you or an elderly person in your family struggles with the need for a lower berth every time you book a train ticket, there's relief. A Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE) has shared a secret IRCTC trick that most people don't know. It explains how to confirm a lower berth for a senior citizen. Let's find out...
Why don't senior citizens get lower berths?
This trick was recently revealed in a video shared on Reddit. In the video, a TTE explains to passengers traveling on the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express why many senior citizens don't get lower berths. He explained that most people make a small mistake when booking tickets, which prevents them from availing the benefits of a lower berth.
According to the TTE, "If two senior citizens book tickets together, they have a high chance of getting a lower berth. However, if three or more senior citizens book tickets together, the system is unable to assign lower berths to all of them."
Therefore, he recommends that if four senior citizens are traveling together, they should book separate tickets for two people each. This way, the chances of getting a lower berth are almost guaranteed.
This IRCTC feature will also ensure a lower berth is confirmed.
When booking railway tickets, you will see an option on IRCTC: "Book only if a lower berth is available." If a lower berth is not available, the system will not automatically book the ticket. This feature is especially helpful for passengers who have difficulty climbing up to the upper berth. It was introduced to ensure that senior citizens, women over 45, pregnant women, and disabled passengers receive priority access to lower berths.
