If your mobile phone is lost or stolen during your train journey, then there is no need to panic now. Indian Railways and the Department of Telecommunications have jointly developed a technology that has made it easier to find your lost mobile phone. The Railway Protection Force is now connected to the CEIR portal (Central Equipment Identity Register), which has made the process of mobile tracking and recovery faster and safer than ever.
The CEIR portal is a digital initiative of the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, aimed at tracking stolen or lost mobile phones and preventing their misuse. Through this portal, the IMEI number can be blocked, making the use of the phone impossible.
How to ask for help
If your phone is lost on the train, you can complain in many ways. Complain online through the Rail Madad app or website. Call the railway helpline number 139 and inform. If you do not want to register an FIR, you can directly complain to the CEIR portal. After that, your complaint is sent to the zonal cyber cell of the RPF. The IMEI number of the mobile is blocked on the CEIR portal. As soon as the mobile is activated with a new SIM, its location is tracked. After getting the mobile, the RPF recovers it and returns it to you.
How many passengers have benefited so far?
Railways claims that with the help of this technology, mobile phones of more than 1.15 lakh passengers have been returned so far. RPF's Amanat campaign has been continuously successful in returning the lost things of the passengers to their owners. Between January 2024 and February 2025, RPF has returned valuable items worth Rs 84.03 crore to the passengers.
Director General of Railway Protection Force Manoj Yadav says that the connection with the CEIR portal is a major achievement in the direction of railway security. Using digital technology, we want to provide a transparent and effective service to the passengers so that their trust in the railways is further strengthened.
What is CEIR
CEIR, i.e., Central Equipment Identity Register, is an online system of the Government of India, which has been created to track and block stolen or lost mobile phones. This system works through the IMEI number of the mobile. If your phone is stolen or lost somewhere, you can go to www.ceir.gov.in and block it by entering its IMEI number so that no one can misuse it. For this, you will have to file a complaint (FIR) with the police and fill in some important information on the website.
If your phone is found later, you can also unblock it by visiting the CEIR portal. This portal also helps in removing phones with fake IMEI from the network. CEIR is part of the Sanchar Saathi initiative, which was started for the safety of mobile users. If your phone is lost, report it to CEIR without delay and ensure your safety.
