The big Viktor Gyokeres decision Mikel Arteta will not make after £63.7m transfer

Viktor Gyokeres is the big-money striker signing Arsenal supporters have been screaming out for.

The Swede signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, joining from Sporting CP in a deal that could be worth as much as £63.7million with add-ons included.

Weeks of negotiations were brought to an end on Saturday night, with Gyokeres announced as a new Arsenal player - the club's sixth signing of a busy summer so far.

And the frontman was introduced to the supporters in Singapore, walking out on to the pitch at the National Stadium prior to the Gunners' 3-2 win over Newcastle in pre-season.

Gyokeres scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting in the last two seasons - a prolific record the Arsenal fans will be hoping translates to his time in England as they look to end a run of three straight second-placed finishes in the Premier League and go one step better in 2025/26.

As the main man at Sporting, Gyokeres was probably sued to getting things his own way in Lisbon, but as the new man in north London, he may have to bide his time when it comes to certain decisions on the pitch, according to Mikel Arteta.

Bukayo Saka is the designated penalty taker at the Emirates Stadium currently, but with Gyokeres scoring a host of spot-kicks for Sporting, the Swede may have something to say about that when he gets on to the training ground with the Englishman.

It will be a big decision in the ranks as to who is the penalty taker moving forward, but, perhaps surprisingly, it is not a decision Arteta plans on making himself.

"Well, I'm sure that he will step in if they allow him to do so," he said. "As you say he's been very consistent and he's scored many goals, but we have some other penalty takers, really good ones as well.

"So they resolve it themselves and if not I will intervene in the right moment."

Arteta is planning to let his player decide who should be the taker from 12 yards, giving the squad all the power with a pivotal decision - unless they cannot come to an agreement.
