The duo are good friends from their time shared playing for their country, including 2022's FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar. There is even a story dating back to Messi's latter years at Barcelona, about how he asked the club to sign Romero, who was in his youth at Juventus at the time.
The 37-year-old, though, ended up departing for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 at the same time Romero completed a permanent switch to Atalanta and then his initial loan to Spurs.
"The fact that Messi would want me in his team, and that he wanted me to come to Barcelona is amazing," Romero told Radio AM 550 via .
"The team that PSG have built is crazy. I'm a bit sad about how Leo left Barcelona, I thought he would have stayed there forever. I wish him all the best, he's a great person and, hopefully, he can win everything, alongside the other Argentinians there.
"I'm thankful to Messi and for everything that I shared with him and the rest of the national team.
"From the first day, the group made me feel like I'd been there for years. That's just the kind of group it is there."
Then after a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador last year, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner said of Spurs' £42m man: "For me, he's the best defender in the world, right now. Amazing performance tonight, man-of-the-match."
